Based on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Austin (played by the charismatic Connor Boyd) and Marcy (portrayed by the talented Dylan Landau), are experiencing similar feelings in parallel as they have "abruptly" ended meaningful relationships. While looking for distractions and forgetting their former significant others, they embark on a rollercoaster of love, friendship, and personal growth. Their interactions are complemented by the endearing duo of Jeff (brought to life by Tim Baran) and Diana (played by the versatile Jordan Hall Campbell), adding humor to the storyline both histrionically and through their wardrobe as they have a fun semi-hidden messaging with the different t-shirts they wear during the performance.
I wonder if the name of the character Austin, is a nod/wink to Jane Austen... anyway...
The chemistry among the cast members is palpable, with Lindsay Bates and Josalyn Elisabeth shining brightly as part of the ensemble. The female voices, in particular, captivate the audience with their beautiful talent, infusing each musical number with emotion and nuance.
Under the guidance of Musical Director Danny Myers, the music in the production activates the storytelling, evoking a range of emotions from the audience. Nathan Fogg DeSisto's minimalistic scenic design is simple and creates a functional backdrop where viewers get into the heart of New York City. Mashun Tucker's lighting design and Eliza Vedar's sound design work harmoniously to set the mood and enhance the atmosphere of the production. Debi Schneiderwind's attention to detail as the prop master adds authenticity to the characters' interactions and the overall setting.
Trinity Theatre has a lot of charisma as a company that translates onto the stage while boosting the new generations to the theatre scene with original and fun stories that resonate. I Love You Because is a delightful musical that captures the essence of love, friendship, and self-acceptance in a modern setting. It makes for a fun night out with friends.
