The interactive Mad Libs–style collaboration program Word Up! at The Old Globe

The interactive Mad Libs–style collaboration program Word Up! Live will kick off the AXIS series this Friday, June 4. Word Up!, hosted by Laura Z., is word-based collaboration between audience and artists that features a new performing artist every week, as well as special community guests from around San Diego. It was launched and streamed on The Old Globe’s YouTube channel during the pandemic, and for the first time ever, audience members will gather in person to collaborate with the featured guest artists Miki Vale and Ric Scales, as well as with San Diego community guest Lorna De La Cruz, to create stories in the rhythmic and rhyming form of rap with the theme of “what it means to be somebody.”

Where: In person on the Globe’s Copley Plaza (1363 Old Globe Way). These events will also be simulcast for free through The Old Globe’s YouTube channel so everyone can enjoy this exciting collaborative theatre-making event.

When: Friday, June 4, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. with music by Miki Vale.

Who: Miki Vale is an international hip-hop artist, teaching artist, and commissioned playwright with The Old Globe. She has co-created physical and virtual spaces for women’s presence and engagement, such as SoulKiss Theatre (soulkisstheater.org), exploring the impact of hip-hop culture on race, class, and gender. In 2016 and 2018 she was the DJ and sound designer for the Globe for All Tour. mikivalethemc.com, @mikivalethemc.

As an artist, he has opened for acts such as Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), KRS-1, Raewkon, and 2 Chainz. 18scales.bandcamp.com.

About AXIS
: Realizing our commitment to making theatre matter to more people, AXIS offers free cultural programs on the Globe’s Copley Plaza, led by local artists and craftspeople. The Globe’s unique physical location—and now our social media platforms—are participatory art venues where we make opportunities for connectivity and creative placemaking. AXIS is an effort to broaden our concept of audience by encompassing diverse, multigenerational constituencies from communities across San Diego County.

Arts engagement programs at The Old Globe are generously supported in part by The James Irvine FoundationQualcomm, and the Ann Davies Fund for Teaching Artists. Digital programs at The Old Globe are supported in part by The Conrad Prebys Foundation. Financial support is provided by The City of San Diego. The Theodor and Audrey Geisel Fund provides leadership support for The Old Globe’s year-round activities.

Reopening of Theatres and Reactivation of the Plaza: The Old Globe recently announced plans for the long-awaited full reopening of its three theatres in Balboa Park. Audiences will be able to once again gather in the Globe’s outdoor theatre starting June 4 and in the two indoor theatres in September. A full lineup of virtual and in-person theatre, boasting five world premieres, offers something for everyone, from musicals, Shakespeare, and new plays to movies, cabarets, family events, immersive storytelling, and more. This slate of programming, telling stories that range across many cultures and created by a diverse group of major talents, is part of the Globe’s ongoing commitment to make theatre matter to more people, especially now as San Diego begins to return to public spaces and this art form we deeply love.
